Volunteers give thousands of hours each year so that each guest experiences:
- Shared meals that bring families together at the end of long days
- Quiet conversations that remind guests they are not alone
- Cared-for common spaces that feel steady and welcoming
- A sense of normalcy during long and uncertain hospital stays
Without volunteers, the House could not function as it does today.
Help make the House feel like home for families of veterans.
Volunteering at the House
|
Volunteering at the House is hands-on and takes place on site, with opportunities designed to fit a wide range of schedules, interests, and levels of availability.
Some volunteers serve on a regular basis, becoming familiar faces who support the daily life of the House. Others participate occasionally as part of corporate, community, or service groups, assisting with meals or specific projects throughout the year. All volunteer activities are coordinated by staff to meet the needs of the House and to respect the privacy, routines, and experience of the families staying here. |
Volunteers are welcome to serve in ways that fit their time, interests, and season of life, whether through ongoing involvement or occasional group participation.
Ongoing VolunteersOngoing volunteers provide consistency and familiarity that help the House feel steady during long hospital stays. Many serve on a regular schedule and become familiar, reassuring faces for families as they come and go.
Roles vary based on interest and availability, but often include caring for shared spaces, supporting daily routines, and helping maintain a calm, welcoming environment for guests and families. These regular volunteers work closely with house staff and are thoughtfully matched to roles that fit their strengths, comfort level, and availability. Volunteers interested in making a regular commitment should contact VA Pittsburgh Voluntary Service Office at 412-360-3990 for more information. Vertical Divider

Group & One-Time VolunteersThe House also welcomes community groups and organizations for one-time or occasional volunteer opportunities that support families and the daily life of the House.
Corporate teams, civic organizations, and community groups may assist with shared meals, special projects, or seasonal support, depending on current needs and timing. Group volunteer opportunities are coordinated in advance with house staff to ensure each experience is meaningful, well-planned, and respectful of families’ privacy and routines. |
Volunteering at the Fisher House is different from many traditional volunteer roles. It takes place in a shared living environment where families are navigating serious medical care. Volunteers are asked to be flexible, respectful of privacy, and comfortable supporting families in a calm, quiet setting alongside staff.
