A Home Away from Home
|
The Pittsburgh Fisher House provides a comfortable place for families to stay while a loved one receives medical care. The House is designed to feel like home during a time that is often stressful, uncertain, and exhausting.
Families are able to rest, prepare meals, and spend time together outside of the hospital, while remaining close to the care their loved one needs. |
Here at the Pittsburgh Fisher House, family is not defined by blood, but rather by the bonds formed from the support of others. There are lifetime bonds created here and that is very special. |

A Day at the House
Morning
Some days begin before sunrise. Families head out early for surgeries, treatments, or to spend the day in their loved one's hospital room. Others start quietly, with coffee in the kitchen and a few calm moments before appointments begin.
Midday
Guests come and go as schedules change. The house ebbs and flows; some return with good news, others with exhaustion and more waiting still ahead. Errands are run, laundry gets done, and conversations happen in passing.
Evening
In the evening, the house often feels most connected. Families gather to share a meal, exchange stories, or spend time together in the living room after a long day. As night settles in, the pace softens. Conversations quiet, lights dim, and families turn in for a few hours of rest before another day of care begins.

Life at the Fisher House is shaped by uncertainty, resilience, and care for one another. Families often arrive as strangers, carrying different stories and worries, and find quiet understanding in the people around them. In shared spaces and unspoken moments, a sense of support takes hold.
This is a place where families are supported during some of life’s most difficult days, and where healing happens not just in the hospital, but in the shared strength of community. |
What to Expect When You Arrive
When a stay is requested, families are contacted by Fisher House staff on the first day of their anticipated arrival to confirm availability and next steps. If a room is available, staff will provide directions to the house and guidance for check-in.
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by a member of the management team or a volunteer. Families receive a brief tour of the house, an overview of how shared spaces work, and time to complete a small amount of required paperwork. Guests are then given keys to the house and their room.
Families may stay at the Fisher House for the duration of the patient’s hospitalization. On the day of discharge, checkout is typically completed by 11:00 a.m., allowing staff time to prepare the room for the next family.
From the moment guests arrive, the goal is simple: to make the house feel safe, welcoming, and easy to settle into during an otherwise demanding time.
