We're here to help families stay close to their loved ones during medical care.Who can stay at the Pittsburgh Fisher House?
The Fisher House welcomes families who are supporting a loved one receiving inpatient care at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. To ensure the house remains safe and supportive for everyone, a few basic guidelines apply:
How to Request a Stay
Stays at the Pittsburgh Fisher House are coordinated through the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System to ensure fairness and appropriate support for all families. Step 1: Speak with a VA Social Worker or Provider To begin the process, the patient or family should let a VA social worker or healthcare provider know they are interested in staying at the House.
⸻ Step 2: Eligibility Review and Consult A VA social worker will conduct a brief screening conversation to confirm eligibility.
⸻ Step 3: Room Availability Notification Because the house operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is often at or near capacity, room availability cannot be confirmed in advance. Guests are contacted by the Pittsburgh Fisher House Manager by 10:00 a.m. on the first day of the requested stay to confirm whether a room is available. We understand that this uncertainty can make planning difficult. When the house is full, additional support options may be available, and staff work closely with families to help identify alternatives when possible. ⸻ Important Notes About Availability

Room Assignment & Check In
Once eligibility is confirmed, the following information explains how rooms are assigned and what to expect on arrival.
How Room Assignments Are Coordinated
Guest stays are coordinated through the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Referrals to the Fisher House are made by a VA social worker or healthcare provider.
Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and reservations are not taken in advance. Once a referral is received, guests are added to the Fisher House wait list.
Families are contacted by 10:00 a.m. on the first day of their requested stay to confirm whether a room is available.
Because the house is often at or near capacity, availability cannot be confirmed prior to the day of arrival.
We understand this uncertainty can make planning difficult, and our staff works closely with families to provide support and alternative options when needed.

If a Room Is Not Immediately Available
When the Fisher House is full, guest requests remain on the wait list. In many cases, Fisher House staff may be able to assist with temporary lodging through Hotels for Heroes, a program sponsored by the Fisher House Foundation.
Hotels for Heroes uses donated hotel points to place families in nearby hotels at no cost to the guest. If a room becomes available at the Fisher House during that stay, families are asked to transition to the house for the remainder of their time.
Hotels for Heroes assistance is available during normal business hours.
